"Shipley College was the foundation to my small-scale success story. I enrolled on to the Health & Social Care programme, intending to become a child nurse, not knowing I would qualify from an amazing university as an Occupational Therapist. The programme at Shipley was enriched with knowledge, opportunities and real-life practice and the support was phenomenal. Whilst on the Level 3 programme I had the opportunity to complete several placements and participate at the world skills competition, which was hosted in Birmingham. The placement modules complimented the education, as it enabled me to witness and implement person-centred care within practice.
The knowledge that I acquired on this programme equipped me with essential skills to deliver optimal care for patients, alongside collaborating with other professionals, such as nurses, therapists, special educational needs co-ordinators, teachers and social workers. This then led me to explore various healthcare professions which led to me discovering Occupational Therapy. Not knowing the practical side to this profession, I was determined to shadow an Occupational Therapist and with the support and encouragement from my lecturers at Shipley College, I successfully completed work experience with professionals, which only increased my passion in this profession.
Overall, my education at Shipley College helped me at university as it prepared me with the relevant knowledge and experience to expand my skills further. Finally, due to the various teaching and assessment methods, I was able to develop my confidence which helped me at university when I was representing pieces of work at formal conferences."
