Shipley College Great People Shoeb Desai

We have some amazing staff members at Shipley, Shoeb is our Head of Student Services and designated Safeguarding Lead, he has worked here for over 20 years.

Alongside his work in Student Services he is also responsible for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. We asked Shoeb about his important work at the College and why he thinks it's a great place to work.

‘As Head of Student Services I have overall responsibility for Full Time Admissions, Careers, Internal progression, Student finance, Free College Meals, Student wellbeing, and safeguarding. I have an extremely hardworking and effective team in Student Services who ensure the work we are responsible for is completed successfully and students are supported at all times. The work in Student Services is very demanding and we have to be continually flexible as we can be dealing with various student issues.

The responsibility we have for the administration of full time admissions is really important to the College, to prospective students and their families/carers. We know this is a fantastic College and want to ensure that young people get to know about us, have the right careers advice and guidance and the opportunity to study with us. We are confident that once people come to our Open Days, that they will be excited about studying with us. For this reason we want to ensure that the process of application and admissions runs smoothly and to make it easy for potential students. Once students start with us, we want to ensure that they receive high quality careers advice and guidance to ensure that they can determine their future career path and reach their full potential. We work closely with curriculum teams to ensure that students receive real work experience and make the best decisions on what they want to do next; whether progressing further with their studies, attending Higher Education or finding an apprenticeship or internship.

Student Services provide one to one support to learners experiencing personal difficulties or possibly at risk of harm. To manage this area of work successfully, we have a whole College approach to maintaining student wellbeing and safety, and work closely with other College departments, such as our Special Educational Needs or disability team, Learning Coaches, Enrichment team and the curriculum staff.  This ensures that student wellbeing, positive mental health and safeguarding is an integral part of their College life, including their curriculum, enrichment activity, classroom support or one to one support with qualified and experienced staff.

I see our role in Student Services as improving the outcomes for all students. However we understand that some students can face additional barriers to their learning and achieving future career goals because of disadvantage, poverty, learning difficulties, social and emotional difficulties or personal trauma. By offering support we facilitate all students to have the opportunity to enjoy their time and succeed with us.

I really enjoy working at Shipley, the small college environment suits me and we’re very lucky with the area we’re based in. Something I really like about working here is that whilst staff work really hard we’re also encouraged to have fun. I am part of the staff badminton club which is a great place for staff to enjoy themselves and it also brings in a social aspect where you can get to know each other and be as competitive as you want’.
