Shipley College is situated in the heart of the historic model village of Saltaire in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The village is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and the College occupies five important buildings on the site. It is a Victorian example of sustainability.
The College supports a multicultural student cohort in the top 10% most deprived in the country, measured by the Index of Multiple Deprivation, and is committed to offering equality of opportunity and tackling discrimination. We seek to ensure everyone is treated fairly, regardless of age, disability, economic status, caring responsibility, pregnancy, marital or civil partnership status, race, colour, ethnicity or nationality, religion or belief, gender, transgender or sexual orientation.
We commit to promoting economic, environmental and social well being within the Bradford region. Our sustainability and environmental policies and procedures demonstrate commitment to this cause, with an action plan to support leadership & governance, partnership & engagement, estates & operations and teaching & learning promoting the EAUC's Sustainability Leadership Scorecard, to improve sustainability aims across college.
We use local suppliers, wherever possible, often awarding smaller contracts for local and specialist services, with long-term community benefit in mind. All students have the opportunity to invest in local community through volunteering opportunities to benefit local people, while supporting the local culture and heritage of Saltaire.
The College started developing “green” thinking way back in the early 1990s. We believe that it is a requirement of the 21st century business to fully engage in sustainability in its widest sense. We were the first College in the world to sign up to the SDG Accord (Sustainable Development Goals) worldwide and we intend to continue to develop sustainability practices and demonstrate our commitment to the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
