Student Life in Saltaire

Life at Shipley College is more than just your course!

Not only do we have fully-equipped classrooms, course-specific areas such as greenhouses, a Fitness Centre and mock aircraft cabin, but we also have a wide range of clubs, activities and opportunities to give you the full college experience. We understand college is often the first taste of freedom from a traditional school environment, and we're here to make it as fun and exciting as possible.

We're located in the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, a village built for mill workers by Titus Salt in the late 1800s, and is popular with tourists from around the world. Just a short walk from our campus is Roberts Park, the River Aire and the Leeds to Liverpool Canal - it's a beautiful place to spend your days learning and making friends, if we do say so ourselves!

During Enrolment Week, all full-time students receive a handbook that has everything you need to know as a student at Shipley College, from financial support to careers information. Keep hold of it during your first few weeks as it'll help you navigate the campus and know where to go if you need help!

All full-time students have opportunities to enrich their CV or university application, improve leadership skills and stand out from the crowd! We understand volunteering provides valuble life experience and helps build well-rounded students so we actively encouage to get invovled with;

  • Organising and promoting events
  • Fundraising for charities/organisations such as Comic Relief and Children in Need
  • Completing voluntary work as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award
  • Taking part in the National Citizenship Service (NCS)
  • Gaining valuable experience, rewards and even additional qualifications working with local agencies and service providers

We have a hub of resources available to any student based in our Exhibition Building! Take advantage of a huge selection of books, e-books, magazines, newspapers and DVDs, plus a range of technology you can borrow including laptops, cameras, voice recorders, VR headsets and even a 3D printer. We also have drop-in session available at our Study Centre to help you complete assingments.

The LRC is home to the Saltaire Archive, a unique collection of pictures and artefacts from life in Saltaire over the years. It includes books, newspapers, Salt family memorabilia, maps, plans, and illustrations on the history and development of Saltaire.

We want all our students to feel fit, healthy and happy. Any student can access the Fitness Centre, based in Victoria Hall that is equipped with cardio equipment, free weights, jump boxes, yoga mats and weights machines. Whether you want to build muscle, tone up or simply have some fun while improving your fitness, we've got fully-trained staff who are on-hand to offer advice.

In our Exhibition Hall and Salt Rock Cafe, there are cafes selling hot & cold food and drinks at affordable prices, with regular themed menus to celebrate the diverse cultures of our students and staff. In the Jonathan Silver Building, there are hot drinks and food available in a student-run cafe. As our campus is based in the centre of Saltaire Village, we also have some great places on the doorstep where you can grab lunch or explore Salts Mill and other independent shops.

We also have regular activites throughout the year such as climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and archery to get you out of the classroom and having fun with your classmates!

There is a lot going on at lunchtime and after classes finish, most of which is completely free! Activities include badminton, table tennis, football, ultimate frisbee, dodgeball, boxercise, basketball, cricket & netball, circuit/fitness training, pool and console gaming.

If we don’t offer your favourite hobby or club, speak to Andy Hamilton, our dedicated Student Liason Officer to see if we can set it up!

If you are a student or apprentice, you are eligible to buy an NUS TOTUM card for £14.99. With the card you will be able to take advantage of student discounts offered in a variety of outlets including restaurants, high street stores, supermarkets, and UK attractions - see more

Most shops will also take your standard issue student ID as proof to receive discount so it's always worthwhile carrying it with you!
