Floristry displays welcome award winners

Level 3 Floristry students and staff from Shipley College once again provided the floral table displays for the prestigious Welcome to Yorkshire White Rose Awards which took place in Harrogate on Monday 12th November.

The students created 50 stunning displays in pink, purple and green to match the brand colours, featuring lillies, roses, aspidistra and foliage to create drama and elegance at the event.

Floristry tutor Melanie Harvey explains “We have a good relationship with Welcome to Yorkshire and it is a fantastic opportunity for students to be involved in an event like this. Creating table displays are also an important part of the student's assignments. They have to research, create a mood board, look at costings and produce materials lists to ensure it all runs smoothly. Once they have decided on a design, this has to be approved by Welcome to Yorkshire.”

The White Rose Awards is the largest tourism awards ceremony in the UK. Categories include Arts & Culture Award, Business Tourism Award, Holiday Park of the Year and Producers and Markers Award.

Student Mandy explains, ‘An event like this gives you a purpose and shows what floristry can be used for. Preparing displays for such events also gives you confidence and really good experience."

Student Nisausala added, ‘Creating table arrangements for an event like this is a real learning opportunity. I have always loved flowers and hope to have my own floristry business in the future”.
