‘I applied for an Access course at Shipley College in 2015 because I wanted to pursue my dreams of becoming a midwife, so I decided to return to education and applied for the Access to Health Professions course.
I knew I would be supported throughout the course after meeting the Access to Higher Education tutor, Sonya. There were moments where I questioned my capability of getting through the course, but Sonya motivated and supported us all when we needed it the most. I did struggle with the Human Physiology part of the course, due to my busy home life and having children to attend to, but I stayed focused.
After finishing my exams and I was pleasantly surprised to see I had gained Distinctions in my units. I expressed my thanks to Sonya and the other tutors for their in-depth teaching and caring support.
Unfortunately, I was unsuccessful on my first UCAS cycle. I moved from Bradford to the West Midlands and applied for my second UCAS cycle after further encouragement and support from the Access tutors at Shipley College. I received an unconditional offer to study Midwifery in September 2017.
Women and men, never give up! Always believing in yourself is the key to succeeding. If you want something, stop at nothing to achieve it. I got where I am today because of hard work, dedication and listening to advice from people who believed in me!’
