Shipley College is offering FREE high-quality industry-standard training in technical skills for Rail and Construction across the Leeds City Region. We are working with employers who need to upskill existing members of staff or recruit new employees to their organisation.

To be eligible, you need to:

  • be 19+ (no upper age limit)

  • live in one of the following areas: Barnsley, Bradford, Craven, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield 

  • have at least a grade D(3) in English and maths

 Or

  •  a Level 2 qualification in a relevant subject

 Or

  • relevant experience

  • committed to working hard in all weathers and be fit enough to be able to achieve the standards required for these manual jobs.

Access to broadband is now vital for many areas of work and leisure. Skilled operatives are needed to install the fibre optics used to transmit the broadband service and data we rely on.  One this course you will gain the knowledge and hands-on practical skills to carry out fibre optic installation and roadwork activities safely and effectively under direction. You must be committed to work hard in all weathers and be fit enough to be able to achieve the standards required for this manual job. The course is delivered over 5 days and you will also complete two days training on roadworks construction and maintenance 

 

  • The Roadworks Training

This course is designed to educate delegates on how to set out signs, cones, barriers and traffic lights on a new road and street works site. The course will cover the following subjects:
  • Safety of workers and the general public when carrying out street works 
  • Maintaining the free movement of the pedestrians and traffic whilst working
  • Complying with the restrictions of work
  • Safe working practices
  • The layout of barriers, warning notices, lamps, signs etc.
  • Special measures – road closure, traffic diversion, portable
  • lights, Operating and positioning portable traffic lights and equipment.
The course contains both theory and practical elements. The tutor delivers the theory element in a classroom but the course is mostly practical based. The tutor will assess your ability to conduct practical exercises effectively. Students will attain a Level 2 Award in LA Locate & avoid underground apparatus and O1-Signing Lighting and Guarding.
