How will apprenticeships benefit my business?
Improved Productivity Apprentices receive relevant training which can have an immediate effect and make a meaningful contribution to your business. Their training is on-the-job so they can gain directly from the skills and experience of those around.
Motivated People Apprentices are motivated people who are keen to learn. By offering apprenticeships you will find it easier to recruit and retain young people as they become valued members of your organisation.
Relevant Training Apprenticeships are designed by businesses in your industry to meet sector specific needs. This means the training is always relevant and it is tailored to the needs of your business by people who genuinely understand what you do.
Avoid Skills Shortages Technological changes and innovation are always with us. New advances and practices are constantly challenging us to keep pace or catch up. Apprenticeships can help young people master the latest technology and working practices to fill any skills gaps you may have and insure against those that are likely to arise. By taking on apprentices, you acquire the specialist skills you need for the latest technology and working practices in your sector.
How do apprenticeships work?
The employer provides on-the-job training and experience. Shipley College produces a learning plan, manages the apprentices through regular reviews and assessments in the workplace and provides additional training.
Employers are responsible for the wages and other employment costs of those apprentices who are their employees. The salary is negotiated to reflect the abilities, age, skills and experience of the individual, taking into account the going rate for the job concerned.
Employers can also choose to take one of our apprentices on placement through the normal recruitment and selection process. Shipley College provides comprehensive support during this process. The college also assists the employer if they wish to consider employing the apprentice at any point during the training.
What makes up an apprenticeship qualification?
Apprenticeships are a combination of work-based training and education , including the following elements:
- A National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)
- Key Skills
- A Technical Certificate
- Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
How long does an apprenticeship last?
This depends on your requirements as an employer and the apprenticeship programme your employee is taking, but usually it varies between one and two years.
How old are apprentices?
The priority age range is 16 to 18 year olds. There are limited opportunities for those aged between 19 and 24.
